The Building of Bright Ideas by Martinec

George Martinec grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania working in the building trade with his father who was a builder and furniture upholsterer.  After receiving a Bachelor's degree and then a Master's degree in music education and counseling, he moved to Corning and began working as a music teacher in the Corning school district. He continued working on his own in the summers through the 1970’s.

In the summer of 1984 after several years spent as director of the Corning-Painted Post West High Band, George decided to formalize his business and Martinec Building & Remodeling was on its way.  Martinec Building & Remodeling grew quickly.  The garage workshop and home office soon became insufficient for the needs of the business so George rented an office and shop in Big Flats that were shared with another company.  After several years, the property was purchased and the business expanded into the entire facility at 83 Canal Street.

Gradually, work was done to improve the property and meet the needs of a growing company.  New offices and work areas were added as the company grew from one to seventeen employees.  A small cabinet showroom was put into place for displaying samples.  The house on the property was renovated and divided so that George could move his parents here from Pennsylvania.
